In Girl Scouts, Discover, Connect, and Take Action are the
three keys to becoming a leader. Each key represents
activities of the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law
that engage girls in practicing leadership skills. The
Girl Scout Philosophy of Leadership says that for girls to
become leaders they need to:
Discover – understand their values and use their
knowledge and skills to explore their world.
Connect – care about, inspire and team with others
locally and globally.
Take Action – act to make the world a better place.
The events are marked with an icon to indicate if the focus
of the activities is Discover, Connect, or Take Action. This
will help you and your daughter choose a variety of
activities that meet her needs and will assist her in gaining
experiences in all aspects of building leadership skills.

+ Do I Need to Complete a Health History?
Include an explanation of any health conditions, food or
latex allergies, activity restrictions, or other information about
the participant that would be helpful to the event
coordinators. Ensure that a signature and an emergency
contact for the day of the event are included on the
Registration form. Some events require a Health History
form for the participant to attend the event.
Look for this
+ symbol and complete the Health History form (also found on page 34 of the 2008 Summer Book).

Will my Girl Scout Earn an Award?
Some events help girls earn a Girl Scout recognition – a
Try-It, Badge, Interest Project Patch (IPP), or a council patch.
When stated “Earn the...”, the recognition is included in the
event fee and will be presented to the girl at the end of
the event.
Can Other Children Attend?
Due to insurance coverage requirements and ageappropriate
guidelines, any child who is not a registered
Girl Scout, or Girl Scouts who are not the appropriate age
for the event, are not allowed to attend activities or stay on
the premises during the event. A teen Girl Scout assistant
may attend with the troop. She should be
listed on the troop roster of
people attending.
What Is the Cancellation/Refund Policy?
To keep costs low, refunds will only be issued if the event
is cancelled by the council or for a family/medical
emergency (request must be made in writing before the
event date). If by the registration deadline you cannot
attend the event for which you have paid, you may
transfer the fee to another event during summer 2008
(one transfer only).
Can Parents Attend?
The success of events depends on the help of adults like
you. We are always looking for adult volunteers –
especially with hobby skills like crafts, pond exploration,
archery, sewing, art, cooking, and gardening. As you look
at the events and see a personal interest in the topic,
volunteer to share your passion with the girls! Extra hands
are needed at many events with no specific skill needed.
With your help, your child and others will embrace this
opportunity and cherish it for many years. To volunteer
today, email summer@gswise.org or call (800) 565-GIRL.
What Teen Leadership Opportunities are
Available?
Teen Girl Scouts are always welcome and encouraged to
assist at events. Use the Event/Workshop Registration form (also found on page 31 of the 2008 Summer Book) to sign up and to show parent permission,
or go online and register through the Program Aide option.
Teens must arrive one hour early and stay approximately
one-half hour after the event to assist with set-up and
clean-up. Teens are required to attend Program Aide Core
Training to learn how to assist girls at events. Certified
Program Aides are also invited to join event volunteers and
staff in developing, planning and facilitating events.
