Background Check – Q & A

Why is Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast doing background checks?
The safety of the girl is the most important consideration in the appointment of a volunteer. What is required and how will the information be used?
Through the Intellicorp Web site, the applicant must enter their name, date of birth, and their social security number. Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast (GSWISE) does not receive this information. Intellicorp will use the information to report on the criminal history of the individual. This report is used to determine eligibility for a volunteer position with this organization. Your social security number on the criminal history records check shall be used for NO other purpose other than to make the process for conducting a background search more accurate. What if GSWISE receives criminal history results that indicate I have a criminal record?
The decision to exclude or limit an individual’s participation as a volunteer is solely within the discretion of GSWISE. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to, the nature and severity of the crime, and the length of time since the criminal conduct occurred. GSWISE shall review each applicant’s record on a case-by-case basis. What information is included in the background check?
This background check includes criminal records, searches of convictions, arrests, court records, inmate records, and sex offender registries. It does not include credit checks or motor vehicle checks. What if GSWISE receives criminal history results that I believe are incorrect?
According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to obtain a free copy of any consumer report from Intellicorp within 60 days of the day when any adverse action is taken against you based on the report. You also have 30 days to report and dispute the results you believe to be incorrect or incomplete to Intellicorp, who is the reporting source. GSWISE will rely upon the information contained in the criminal history report until a corrected report has been provided. Will all volunteers need to complete a background check?
Any volunteer who has or may have care, custody, and control of girls, such as all leaders. Any volunteer with financial responsibilities, such as service unit treasurer. See Addendum A for further clarification. Addendum A is part of the Operational Volunteer Policies and Practices.

What about confidentiality?
GSWISE will maintain the confidentiality of all criminal background information, including information regarding disqualification decisions
