Summer Employment FAQ's 2008

1. Why is Camp Unique?
The Girl Scout mission "Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place" is truly about empowering for girls and women alike. Camps Alice Chester and Camp Pottawatomie Hills, and Camp Silverbrook are more than just pieces of real estate; they are awe-inspiring locations where staff can watch and help girls grow.

At our camps, we all live by the Girl Scout Law & Promise, which set up expectations of how we treat each other and provide ideals to live to.

Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Law
I will do my best to be
Honest and fair,
Friendly and helpful,
Considerate and caring,
Courageous and strong, and
Responsible for what I say and do,

And to

Respect myself and others,
Respect authority
Use resources wisely,
Make the world a better place,
And be a sister to every Girl Scout.

*There is a spiritual foundation in the Girl Scout movement. However, since Girl Scouting is for all girls, those whose beliefs may be better expressed by a word or phrase other than “God” may substitute that word or phrase when they say the Girl Scout Promise. When written, the Promise always has the word “God.”

2. Where do I sleep?
Camp Alice Chester and Camp Pottawatomie Hills: Staff rotate between A-Frame cabins, platform tents and buildings.
Camp Silverbrook: Staff live in cabins, buildings, or platform tents.

3. Will I have internet access?
Yes, both camps offer free internet access available during off-time.

4. How do I get paid?
Camp staff get paid by check biweekly. Your salary is divided accordingly into two-week periods.

5. What’s on the menu?
Camp Alice Chester and Camp Pottawatomie Hills: Our professional food service is awesome. We eat family style with campers in our big dining hall. The cooks prepare a hot breakfast each morning. Cold cereal, toast, and coffee are always an option. Lunch and dinner are always accompanied by an open salad bar. The food service staff can work with special dietary needs.

Camp Silverbrook: Breakfast typically consists of hot meals, cereal or fruit smoothie drinks. Staff make their own lunches, grabbing from fruit, veggie and sandwich supplies. Dinner is a well balanced meal featuring fruit, veggies, a hot dish and sometimes a dessert. The cooks are always open to meal suggestions from staff and prepare vegetarian options.

6. Do I have to be a Girl Scout?
This is one of our most frequent questions. You have to become a registered Girl Scout upon being hired but do NOT need to have been a Girl Scout when you were growing up. Girl Scout registration costs $10 for the membership year.

7. What type of experience do I need?
A love for working with girls is necessary. While having Girl Scout experience is a plus, it is not required. Overall, we are looking to hire people who desire to be role models for younger women, a comfort level for working outside all day and a great attitude that shines through on rainy days, when your campers are homesick or when you've sung the same camp song 100 times.

8. What type of off-time will I have?
Camp Alice Chester and Camp Pottawatomie Hills: You will get a minimum of 24 continuous hours off per week. Usually, though, it is 40 continuous hours from Friday 6PM to Sunday noon. Each day you get 2 hours off.

Camp Silverbrook: One day per week and 3-4 hours per day

9. What are other perks?
Most staff receive American Red Cross training and certification in CPR and First Aid at no cost. Additional benefits include: free room and board, a staff t-shirt, free laundry, use of camp equipment including canoes and kayaks, a great addition to your resume, and healthy outdoor living.

10. I have special skills/talents; can I share them?
If you speak a different language, know a type of dance, play an instrument, play a sport, identify trees at glance, know survival skills, are most at home in a theatre, we want you to share it! Both our camps offer activity sessions that allow staff to share their passions with girls. Last summer, we had staff teach Spanish, henna painting, archeology, tai chi, scrapbooking and dance aerobics just to name a few.

11. How do I move up to administrative positions? (Assistant Camp Director, Coordinator, etc)
21 years of age is often a requirement for such positions due to ACA (American Camp Association) standards. Also, you should let your supervisor know that you intend to work at our camp for several years and put in the time to gain the experience necessary for these positions. You and your supervisor can then evaluate your progress toward that goal.

12. Is camp diverse?
Camp Alice Chester, Camp Pottawatomie Hills, and Silverbrook strive to create environments that are "For All the Girls." Overall, about 25% of staff are women of color. Both camps also hire staff from around the world to bring different perspectives and cultures to enrich the summer. In the past, we have hosted staff from England, Australia, Germany, Thailand and Holland.
