Kelly "Clover" Ireland is the new director of Camp Silverbrook. She has lots of camp and Girl Scout experience, so we're very excited to start the summer and have lots of fun at Camp Silverbrook! We asked her a few questions so you can learn more about her.
What’s your camp name? How did you get your camp name?
My camp name is Clover. Everyone says I have a very Irish sounding name…when I asked the PA’s at Whispering Willows Volunteer-led Day Camp last year what my name should be and someone said Clover. I liked it. :)
What did you do before becoming the director of Camp Silverbrook?
Before I came to Camp Silverbrook I worked as a Membership Manager for Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast, focusing on areas in the Central Region. I worked with troop volunteers to start new troops and with Service Area Administrative volunteers to provide support to the volunteers and bring events to girls in the community. Before I came to Girl Scouts I worked as an AmeriCorps member at a camp and teaching a vocal and bell choir for kids in K-4 grade.
What’s your camp background and experience?
When I was a kid I went to a Girl Scout camp called Camp Deer Trails—it is a lot like our Camp Alice Chester. I spent most of my summers at Camp Greenwood and that is where I returned to work while I was in college. I worked as a counselor, lifeguard, boating instructor, challenge course facilitator, theater instructor and doing administrative work in the office.
What is your favorite part of camp?
There are too many things I love at camp to pick a favorite!!! I made some of my best friends at camp—both as a camper and as a staff member. I love being in nature and I LOVE the water!!! Through camp I have had so many more experiences than I would have had otherwise and that is probably why I love it so much!
What is your favorite camp activity?
On top of loving everything in the water, I LOVE campfires! I also learned out how puddle jump on a rainy day at Girl Scout camp and I still love to do it!
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
I am really looking forward to meeting all the girls! I know how much I grew as a camper and I can’t wait to watch them as they try new things, make new friends and have a great time!
What is your advice for first-time campers?
Try something new! Make a new friend, try a new food, learn a new game, or do a craft you haven’t done before. Maybe you will even try something that you can take home to teach or share with your family or friends!
Why do you love being a Girl Scout?
I love being a Girl Scout because I believe that girls can do anything they set their minds to! As a Girl Scout you can try new things, learn and be a part of your community, and figure out what you want to do to make the world a better place. On top of that you have a wonderful sisterhood to back you up and who wants to help you succeed—how great is that?!
