While Girl Scout camp offers opportunities to learn and grow with other Girl Scouts in your community, Girl Scout Destinations feature adventures around the United States and abroad. When she found a Girl Destination to experience Broadway in New York, Girl Scout Hannah knew she wanted to go. “I love musicals,” she said.
The Broadway Bound Destination featured a mix of Broadway shows, Broadway workshops, and sightseeing in New York City. During her trip, Hannah saw four shows: SIX The Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Hadestown and Wicked. “When we saw Little Shop of Horrors, we got to meet [actress] Sarah Hyland,” she said.
They also visited the Museum of Broadway. “I really loved it and wished I could have stayed three hours (or three days) longer,” she said. “It was really cool. I really liked all of the exhibits.”
Another highlight was participating in four different workshops with Broadway Imagined. The first was a makeup workshop with a Broadway designer who currently works on Cabaret. “He did half of one of my friend’s makeup, and it was really cool to learn about that,” Hannah said.
For the second workshop, they learned the dance for the opening number of Little Shop of Horrors, which was taught by one of the women who was an alternate for one of three urchins as well as understudy for the voice of Audrey. The third workshop was on improv, and the fourth workshop was an ensemble workshop.
Hannah also loved their visit to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “We went to the Met, and it was really cool,” she said. “I also could have stayed there for a few more days.”
The entire Destination trip confirmed Hannah’s desire to return to Broadway. “I already knew before the trip that I definitely want to be on Broadway someday in some capacity,” she said.
Hannah also learned that she could travel on her own. “It was my first time flying alone,” she said. “I thought it was going to be scary, but I realized there was another Wisconsin person on both of my flights. It wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be because of that.”
Taking a Destination trip resulted in new friendships for Hannah, too. She became friends with the other attendees and still keeps in touch with them. “It was really cool to meet other Girl Scouts from other states, to compare our experiences,” she said. “It was fun learning about other states and what’s completely different from Wisconsin.”
Hannah highly recommends going on a Destination to every Girl Scout who is considering one. “It’s definitely worth it!” she said. “You get to meet a lot of cool people, and now I have a friend who lives in Hawaii. I think that’s pretty cool!”
