For many Girl Scout campers across southeastern Wisconsin, coming upon photos of or visiting camp properties can unearth fond memories.
Girl Scout alum Pam Messer remembers her first fall and spring camping experiences at Camp Winding River and Chinook Program Center in the early 1970s.
“Our troop’s first camping experience was indoors at Camp Winding River. I remember it was in the fall, and it rained most of the weekend. Cooking over a fire was quite a challenge!” said Pam.
Pam remembers unexpected weather in the spring at camp too.
“I also remember tent camping in the spring at Camp Chinook [Chinook Program Center]. I didn’t have a very warm sleeping bag, and it was quite cold. There was even some frost in the morning. My mom sent me with my snowmobile suit to sleep in to stay warm! And, it worked!” said Pam.
Following college graduation, Pam moved out of the state for three decades. After returning to the area, she attended a class at the Catholic Ecology Center.
“As soon as I drove on to the property, I recognized it as Camp Winding River! It brought back so many memories, especially thoughts of friends I still see,” said Pam.
The chilly weather – and bonding over finding ways to problem solve and explore nature in the conditions – united the group for their lifetime.
“We’re still friends even though we were in Girl Scouts 50 years ago,” reflected Pam.
