In the 1990s, Girl Scout camping was growing across southeastern Wisconsin. Girl Scout alum Peg Petersen shares her memories of Trefoil Oaks during the decade.
In 1991, I became a Girl Scout leader for my oldest daughter’s troop (Troop #127) at SC Johnson Elementary School in Racine. We started with first grade and went through to senior year in high school in 2003. I did my meetings the first year by myself. I was the leader, cookie mom, and anything else the troop needed. In my second year as a leader, my sister-in-law Susanna Petersen became my co-leader.
In 1997, I started a new troop at SC Johnson Elementary School – Troop #106. I had a wonderful group of girls, and my sister was my co-leader for this troop too.
My fondest memories were camping at Trefoil Oaks with both troops. The older troop would buddy up with the younger one, and they had so much fun together. The girls loved to sing Girl Scout songs and do crafts!
I worked several summer day camps at Dreams End camp and Trefoil Oaks camp too. I was also the bus mom for those summer sessions. I never want to hear the Little Red Wagon song again!
My best memories from that time were seeing the girls grow as individuals.
